About

Artist Kim Hak-kyun earned his bachelor's and master's degrees in South Korea before moving to the U.S. in 2003, where he completed another master’s at the City University of New York. Since then, he’s been actively working between New York and Korea. Kim’s career began with his first solo exhibition in 1994, and he’s since participated in over 300 group shows. He started receiving awards in 1994 and was recognized as "Young Artist of the Year" by the Art Forum Newgate in 2003. In 2007, he was honored with the Lehman College Excellence in Art Award.

Kim's work features elements of Pop Art, incorporating popular imagery and objects. His signature characters, 'Super Baby' and 'Super Dog,' are depicted using expressive forms and primary colors, creating humorous and cute images that are easily approachable.
Viewing Kim's works evokes a sense of joy and positive energy. A recurring theme in his art is the use of rainbow-shaped arches and clouds in the background, with ‘Super Baby’ and ‘Super Dog’ often standing on planets or cubes in the center of the composition. The core message of his work is the "revival" of humanity. Through 'Super,' Kim explores the frailty of humans before a higher power, a feeling intensified during the pandemic.
The concept of 'Super' in Kim's work refers to something beyond human capacity—an infinite yearning for health, boundless strength, freedom in air, water, and light, and a life free from death's grasp. It reflects a deep admiration for eternal life, where one could live freely in the universe, unbound and undefeated. This idea of happiness may remind us of Superman. Nietzsche spoke of the Übermensch and its destruction, but Kim's vision is one of humanity's revival, or "Reborn." In the Bible's Genesis, God judged humanity with a flood during Noah's time, but the rainbow was His promise to mankind. Kim's 'Super Baby' and 'Super Dog,' standing on planets, represent the rebirth of humanity after the pandemic and the gift from God symbolized by the rainbow.
